Flowering Crabapples

The flowering crabapple has long been a favorite in northeastern landscapes. It’s versatile and a tree of multi-season interest. In addition, it’s a very hardy tree in CNY winters and grows well in our heavy clay soils. In the spring, crabapples are one of the earlier trees to bloom with a profuse display of flowers before the foliage emerges. Later in the season, crabapples can be very colorful with fall foliage colors and bright fruit.

Many crabapples produce very colorful fruit that looks as though the small tree is flowering again. A wonderful characteristic that has been selected and bred into many varieties is fruit persistence. This means that there is no mess from falling fruit. It stays on the tree until either birds use as a food source in late winter or it falls later in the spring. When it falls, it’s a very small, dried, raisin-like pit. Some varieties produce very few fruits.

The wide variability in flower color, fruit color, foliage shape and color, canopy shape, and overall size make it so that there is a crabapple to accent most any landscape. At Chuck Hafner’s, we have select only the varieties of crabapples that have persistent fruit, superior ornamental characteristics, and are very disease resistant so that you will have the best results when planting these great small trees in your landscape.
